If you hit escape on the 'song setup' window, or the 'difficulty selection' window, instead of closing said windows, it exits edit mode. (or prompts you to save, if you've made changes)
In the case of 'song setup' it's pretty random. Sometimes it only closes the dialogue, other times it exits edit mode.
Side note: Hitting escape while in 'design' or 'timing' should take you back to 'compose', seems more natural to me.
