IPA isn't that hard since the etymology of it's characters is heavily influenced by the latin script. I can recognise a vague-ish amount of IPA characters but to be fluent, you can make it in a year from what I heard. IPA serves as a better indicator for phonetics.

I remember participating in a district-level spelling bee in 7th grade and a state-level one in 8th grade. With that in mind, I would suggest adding definitions and languages of origin for each set of IPA pronunciations.
