It's a bit of both, my laptop has an always-on fully powered USB port so it charges my phone just fine. At work I have a monitor with a powered USB hub built-in, so I can plug my phone into that too.

Have you been to a doctor for this. If you're feeling that much pain you may need to be prescribed a stronger pain reliever like Percocet etc.
