it usually happens to me, but that's because the map stops downloading halfway, leaving you an incomplete or corrupt file.

download it again and make sure it fully finishes before you install.

Now I'm awaiting for the results now
18:18 [Winshley] Hi
18:18 *StormR1d3r* hello
18:19 [Winshley] I'm trying to help now
18:19 *StormR1d3r* thanks ^^
18:19 [Winshley] Where is osu! folder located
18:19 *StormR1d3r* the desktop
18:19 *StormR1d3r* C:
18:20 [Winshley] So it's C:\Users\Emil\Desktop\osu!\ ?
18:20 *StormR1d3r* yep
18:21 [Winshley] Try to download the map again
18:21 [Winshley] And put it inside osu!\Songs folder
18:22 *StormR1d3r* but it gets downloaded as an osz
18:22 [Winshley] See whether there's any error messages
18:22 *StormR1d3r* and osu unpacks it
18:23 [Winshley] osu! can automatically unpack osz files if the Songs folder has any osz files
18:24 *StormR1d3r* same error
18:24 *StormR1d3r* "corrputed or incomplete map"
18:24 [Winshley] So it doesn't have to be necessarily double click the osz, or drag-and-drop it
18:24 [Winshley] Hmm
18:25 *StormR1d3r* i've tried atleast 100 maps
18:25 [Winshley] Rename file extension to ZIP, and see whether WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc can open them
18:25 *StormR1d3r* not a single one got installed
18:26 *StormR1d3r* i'll try
18:27 *StormR1d3r* i can install it manually
18:27 *StormR1d3r* yea
18:27 [Winshley] I see
18:28 *StormR1d3r* osu lost the ability to unpack osz files it seems
18:29 [Winshley] Well it works on my side though :/
18:29 *StormR1d3r* :I
18:29 [Winshley] Restart osu! ?
18:30 *StormR1d3r* it's been happening for like a week now
18:30 [Winshley] Oh ok
18:30 [Winshley] Hmm, can you open ZIP files with the standard Windows Explorer
18:30 [Winshley] ?
18:31 *StormR1d3r* yea
18:31 [Winshley] Hmm, quite a complicated issue there @.@
18:32 *StormR1d3r* :<
18:32 *StormR1d3r* i was away from this computer for two days
18:32 *StormR1d3r* and when i came back this happened :<
18:32 [Winshley] Perhaps your anti-virus is blocking osu! or something?
18:33 *StormR1d3r* why would it start now?
18:33 [Winshley] I'm trying to find out the cause of the problem now
18:34 *StormR1d3r* i'll check the firewall
18:35 *StormR1d3r* nope, no rules about osu
18:35 [Winshley] Is your C:\Users\Emil\AppData\Local\Temp folder corrupted? Afaik, osu! extracts the files there during importing
18:36 *StormR1d3r* i could try deleting it
18:37 *StormR1d3r* no effect
18:37 [Winshley] I'm running out of ideas now
18:38 [Winshley] I don't know what happened here orz
18:39 *StormR1d3r* :I
18:39 *StormR1d3r* thanks for trying! :D
18:39 [Winshley] No problem =)
18:40 *StormR1d3r* oh yeah
18:40 *StormR1d3r* one more thing
18:40 [Winshley] ?
18:40 *StormR1d3r* chrome doesn't open links from osu anymore
18:40 *StormR1d3r* if i try to look at lets say your profile
18:41 *StormR1d3r* chrome gives a "chrome stopped responding. relaunch now?"
18:41 [Winshley] Hmm...
18:41 *StormR1d3r* but it doesn't mess with chrome, it doesn't crash it or anything
18:41 [Winshley] Something definitely went wrong, I guess
18:42 *StormR1d3r* it started happening at the same time as the map thingie
18:42 [Winshley] You might wanna try running chkdsk /f /r
18:42 [Winshley] Just to make sure your disk is error-free
18:43 *StormR1d3r* that window disappears in less than a second :o
18:44 [Winshley] You need to specify the drive lol
18:44 *StormR1d3r* D:
18:44 [Winshley] So it's "chkdsk /f /r C:"
18:45 [Winshley] You know how to do it, right?
18:45 *StormR1d3r* didn't work :o
18:45 *StormR1d3r* chkdsk /f /r C: in " Run"
18:46 [Winshley] The process takes hours
18:46 [Winshley] And you'll be prompted to do it after restart
18:47 [Winshley] Try typing that on Command Prompt, and see what it says
18:48 *StormR1d3r* http://puu.sh/2zd3C
18:49 [Winshley] *facepalm* I forgot something
18:50 [Winshley] Right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator
18:50 [Winshley] And type chkdsk again
18:54 [Winshley] You there?
18:55 *StormR1d3r* http://puu.sh/2zdcT
18:55 *StormR1d3r* this is it?
18:56 [Winshley] Yes
18:57 [Winshley] Remember that it takes hours, so you might wanna do it while you asleep
18:57 *StormR1d3r* i'll have to restart later as i have some work to do now
18:57 [Winshley] Oh alright
18:57 *StormR1d3r* see ya ^^
18:58 [Winshley] Come back to the forums and post your result at your thread
18:58 [Winshley] I'm awaiting the results ^^
18:59 *StormR1d3r* alrighty ^^

Scan is done. I don't know where the log is stored though, and if the scan included repair then it wasn't enough for the problem with installing maps to go away
Winshley
I'm already running out of ideas already. The last escort I can only think of is to reinstall Windows. :o

I'll wait for some more suggestions. Thanks for your help, Winshley :)

It sounds like it might be a permissions issue. Do you have complete control over your osu! folder?

Also when you double click on a .osz what happens? Did it used to work? Try extracting manually to test whether your beats actually work when you download them. you can do so by right-click and opening with a extracting/zip program.

Full permissions and everything. I already tried extracting a map manually and it worked fine.

Let's see if some game files are corrupted...

Could you copy osume.exe to an empty folder in your PC? Any empty folder is fine.
Run the file: it should redownload the entire game in this folder.
When it is finished, download a .osz file (try with IE or another browser this time, you never know) and put it in the new Songs folder.
Run the new osu!.exe and tell us if it imported the beatmap without errors.

(you might disable your antivirus during the entire process for maximum chance of success)

nope, same error
XPJ38
...Whoa. So the problem isn't coming from osu!? My guess is that your Windows or some software plays a role in that issue, but I can't put my finger on it.

Err... Could you share a list of all the softwares you installed on your PC? Hopefully, we might have a clue on what's happening there.

It may be the one problem than can I say below

1. you downloaded it then instantly ended that's why an error
MillhioreF
Out of curiosity, do maps import correctly if you move the .osz into Songs, then press F5 at song select to let osu! process them?
Winshley

If you read our chatlog, you'll notice that he already did what you asked.
MillhioreF
Oh, my mistake. So much text, I just skipped to the end of it :o
I'm totally out of ideas, this is just bizzare.

Probably not because he can manually extract and import them correctly.

Have you tried to download in a different browser? (out of ideas...)

Nevermind, I must be blind. -_-

You don't use Cheat Engine for osu!, do you? If you have ever used it, osu! might somewhat block itself and cause the problem.

And yeah, you should do some cleaning in your PC. BrowserProtect, Complitly (and maybe "DVD Software"? Never heard of that one), I am not sure you wanted these programs. Not sure how these could block osu!, but install Ad-Aware and perform a cleaning up, just in case. It might help.

Does osu! have complete control over its subfolders? If you haven't, select "Force Folder Permissions". It was the first thing that came to mind for me.

fixed everything there is with ad-aware [it didn't manage to delete browserprotect using ad-aware though, I had to use AdwCleaner for it]
i've used cheat engine [once! not innocent tho : ( ] on a different PC and a different account so i don't think that's the cause
folder, subfolders and files are all set to "full control"
XPJ38
...I'm running out of ideas, sorry. This is definitely weird :?

thanks for trying : )
TheVileOne
Try to run osu! on a different user. an even been idea would be to create an entirely separate installation of osu1 with its own song folder on a different osu! account. See if it works.
Topic Starter
sorgenehtyals
It worked on a fresh installation (same PC)
Winshley
Is it a fresh installation of same user account?
JhowM
this puush leads me to think you are/was running a low privileges (non admin) user account as there is no user name for SYSTEM processes

That's because he probably didn't click on the "Show processes from all users" button just below the list.

Problem fixed. The previous installation had corrupted files [I switched to it and encountered the error, but it's fine on the fresh installation (same account for both)]
Thanks for all of your help, folks!
Have a great day! : ]

Good for you then. I still don't understand how this is possible since you somewhat did a fresh installation before by downloading osu! in an empty folder with osume.exe, but oh well...

i don't get it either, but atleast it worked
