So I was playing this map beatmapsets/511480#mania/1095964 and for some reason, I just happened to get a 903x. Apparently this is just one max combo above all top 50 players. I tried using the auto bot, and they got 902. What happened?!

i think that if you hold a long note for a few frames longer than you're supposed to, it'll increase your combo, since the more you're holding the note for, the higher your combo gets. auto bot got a 902 because it holds exactly how much it needs to and no more.

this doesn't mean you should constantly hold your lns a few frames longer as this will hurt your accuracy, im just pointing out where your combo comes from.

OOHHHHH...
That actually makes a lot of sense. I thought I bugged out the beatmap.

Thank you!

Yes, PositioniX is 100% correct. I forget the exact amount of time it takes for one combo tick while holding LNs, but any time you overhold the LN by at least that much you will gain an additional combo. However, the downside is that you will at most be able to receive a 300 for that note. In scorev1 (the current mania scoring system) LNs are given a single judgement, but that judgement takes into account both the press and release timing. If you mistime either one, you will not get a 320/max on it, and instead get something less (I'm not exactly sure how it works internally though).

I've got a bad habit of overholding and regularly get combos higher than auto would get :<

Been wondering for a while, but since combo impacts score can overholding LNs increase score by much?

Combo is not a factor in scoring, but rather a hidden "bonus" variable (It's a variable that is capped between 0 and 100, starts at 100, increases with 300s and 300gs, and decreases with other judgments). The bonus variable changes only with judgments, so how much combo you get doesn't matter.
