Osu!Mania Performance Points and Difficulty Calculation

I think we all understand how badly Osu!Mania needs a PP rework again, as well as a revamp for the difficulty calculation.

Starting with the difficulty calculation, there are just too many maps that any player can farm, dare I say Triumph and Regret, simply because the difficulty calculation relies too heavily on individual parts of a map rather than an "average". Making a comparison with The Empress by Undead Corporation (4.18*) and basically any low 5* map you can think of, we could all agree on which maps are technically harder.

This leads into why PP is so poorly handed out to players that don't exactly show the greatest skills, which goes hand in hand with the OD of maps. I've taken a few looks at some maps and the OD tends to be around 8 for nearly every map which in my opinion is extremely inaccurate.

Though I'm probably biased and out of date, a couple changes to the difficulty calculation would be nice, especially for the abundance of LN maps that exist in 7k.
A few things to consider are how close notes are in patterns (not necessarily jack hammers), double stairs, randomness (how far apart each consecutive note is relative to one another) and long notes. A difficult feature of LN maps are disjoint long notes that start and end at different times and having individual patterns while holding long notes.

Last but not least, maps with more than 4 keys seriously need to be worth more thank 4k. When you compare a 4k to 7k you'll notice that the accuracy is trememdously different as having 7 keys to smack is in fact much much harder to do when it comes to accuracy. It also allows 4k players to flood the ranks with their cheeky 99% plays on nearly every map while a 7k player would find themselves farming maps that are 2 stars harder purely because accuracy is too hard to attain in 7k.

Hope I'm not too biased with this post, just wanna raise some awareness of the mania ranking system as the old forum post seems to be 7 years old. I have personally been playing the game since 2014 so I don't think I'm too crazy but yeah, some feedback would be nice and development could be even better.

Yeah my top play is a map that I mashed with my fingers which was easier than some maps that gave much lower pp. I agree something needs to be done.

that last point is questionable. 4key is already omeganerfed as is relative to 7key, 4key gets a lot faster and denser at much slower star ratings than 7key, meaning you have to be really good at mashing really fast to even come close to the pp counts you can get on 7key with much less strain on each individual finger.

Aside from that, the beginning of your post shouldn't be news to very many people. To elaborate a bit on your empress SC, star ratings biggest factor is objects per second, the patterns you have to play at that speed are mostly irrelevant to SR.

So you end up with the example of like 20nps index streams obviously being harder than 22 notepersecond jumpstreams for most people, but the jumpstreams get the higher star rating. Its even worse if you compare streams to chordjacks and LNs (which make up the majority of high SR charts- go figure.)

Mania's diff rating system doesnt just need work, it needs to be thrown out entirely and replaced with something that at least halfway accomplishes what it aims to do.

And so to base rankings on such a poorly implemented system makes your rankings dubious at best. Cant say i expect to see it change though. And in the meantime there are (imo) better VSRGs to play.

It depends on what level you are comparing them at, at lower star ratings, 7key is very underrated compared to 4key in average, it's just at high levels (high note densities) when 7key starts to become overrated in average. I have played both keycounts more or less equally, and I still haven't reached the point where my 7key plays are rated higher than my 4key plays.

You might just be better at 4key. Likewise, in terms of the overall difficulty scale, you arent exactly near the top. 4-5 stars is middle of the ladder. The real inequality is much higher. If you want to get into mania 3 digits with 4key only, you need to be getting strong acc on dt 6-7 star mashfests. Which are ABSURDLY more straining on any given finger than a comparable star rating 7key chart.

It might be harder to learn 7key as a game mode than 4key, but 4key gets crazy dense and fast much sooner than 7key in terms of SR.

I got a bandaid solution.
Separate the key modes.

Now 4key players won't have to compare their insanely hard dt play to an average LN inflated 7k play. They will compare their scores among other 4k plays.

Newbie 7key players no longer have to feel like they're not progressing at all because their pretty average mid 4star 4k play they did months to a year ago just shits on all their 7k plays due to 7k being underrated (in the beginning <5stars). They will only compare their 7k plays with their other 7k plays.

It won't fix everything. There'll still be farm maps and underrated maps and all that... but those can be adjusted a lot more easily and accurately since you won't have to consider how it will affect other key modes as it is 'now' specific to that key mode. Looking at you score v2 >:(
7k LN inflation is specific to 7k and dense mash fests in 4k is specific to 4k.
4k stars are just not comparable to 7k stars in all levels. Beginner, average, expert. All of them.
