I'm not seeing a problem. Storyboard subfolders don't have .osu map files in them. If there's no maps, then you just prune and move on. This is pretty basic.

The sub-folders you wanted doesn't have any .osu either. The latter ones does though

I dont think that the folder system is build on those conditions
Then again, osu! does display the difficulties and counts them

But still, I see no point in this. You can always make a new folder in the root folder instead.

They contain directories. I think it's important to remember that eventually the map sets aren't going to be directories but files, which makes things even simpler to figure out the leaves of the tree.

Typically the issue with these things is links, which can create loops. Osu currently doesn't follow them, which is a good enough solution.
