There must be must-watches for animes. Gather them in a list, I'll activate a poll when there are like 50 of them.

What I thought of:

5cm/second

Akira

Clannad

Code Geass

Digimon(1st season only)

Death Note(I'm not sure with this one)

Dragon Ball

Ghost in the Shell

Grave of the Fireflies

Inuyasha(How can I forget this?)

NANA(They say its suitable for women)

Neon Genesis Evangelion(Should I really add this?)

Spirited away(Why should I even add this?)

Woah, that's a lot of "must-watches". Honestly, I think that only few specific and significant masterpieces validate a must-watch (even though I'm a big fan of K-ON!, even that's not one of them ><). These include:
- Death Note
- Evangalion
- Mahou Shoujo Madoka Majika
- Clannad & Clannad After Story
- Spirited Away

and possibly:
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Nichijou or Lucky Star (but not both)
- Tonari no Totoro

(Admittedly, I haven't really seen as much anime as somebody like, say ampzz, so my list isn't as comprehensive and probably subject to change as I discover/find time to watch anime ^^)

Not only the first season of Digimon deserves to be watched.
The first five ones are all interesting in their own ways, with the first and third being the bests.

I hate to be that guy but... these lists are bad.

Now for a list of my own bad taste:
Spice & Wolf
Nodame Cantabile
Mawaru Penguindrum
GitS
Baccano!
Dennou Coil
Card Captor Sakura
Great Teacher Onizuka
Last Exile
Paranoia Agent
Mushishi
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Big O

That's all I can think of off the top of my head...

Actual must-watches are rather obvious, for the most part. They're not all shows I like, not by a longshot (especially Angel Beats! and Evangelion), but they've had a major impact on the industry either back in their time or recently (this is a work in progress, but eh) Either that or they can be prime examples of a genre done magnificently (Paradise Kiss, The Tatami Galaxy). A must-watch list is actually rather good if you want to get people into anime.

  1. Ghost in the Shell
  2. Princess Mononoke
  3. Grave of the Fireflies
  4. Cowboy Bebop
  5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
  6. Revolutionary Girl Utena
  7. Serial Experiments Lain
  8. Haibane Renmei
  9. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003; Brotherhood is pretty but disposable)
  10. Princess Tutu
  11. Rose of Versailles
  12. Death Note
  13. Angel Beats!
  14. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
  15. Paradise Kiss
  16. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
  17. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  18. Azumanga Daioh
  19. The Tatami Galaxy
  20. FLCL

I wonder if naruto should be considered a must-watch then. Because even though I dislike it, it admittedly has made an enormous impact on the industry, especially overseas. It succeeds as a shounen anime, and although there's tons of filler, it must have done something right or else it wouldn't have been (and still is) so successful.

It should be Dragon Ball if it's for shounen genre. I could also think of Hokuto no Ken & Jojo's Bizarre adventure but they were more success inside Japan not internationally like Dragon Ball. Oh and maybe Pokemon too I wonder

Digimon>Pokemon.

The theme(Butterfly) and the cartoon of the 1st season of Digimon is literally legendary in China. Every time I watch a video about Butterfly(the website allows timed comments to appear in the video), there's always the "無限大な夢のあとの,何もないの世界じゃ"(First sentence of chorus) spam.

Pokemon had been terribly mangled by the amateur script writers who doesn't care about changing the protagnist or making Ash not being always "the Savior". I can watch Tom & Jerry at how Tom loses everytime. Team Rocket? Just can't, too annoying to watch them fail.

Everywhere else though (I think), Pokemon is vastly more popular than Digimon in almost every respect. This includes the games, trading cards, toys, general merchandise, and television series. I don't even know the name of the main character in Digimon, but pretty much everybody knows about pikachu and ash.

Pokemon is very successful at video gaming and merchandise, but not anime. Move to "Video Games" forum, and Pokemon > Digimon. But in this area of Otaku anime, Digimon > Pokemon
