osu!catch Community Mentorship Program

2017 Summer Cycle (Cycle 3)

Greetings!

Are you an aspiring osu!catch mapper or modder who wants to learn new skills, tricks and tips to help you improve? Then look no further! We present the third cycle of the osu!catch Community Mentorship Program! Regardless of whether you're a returning participant or a new face, please read this post carefully to find out more. (The announcement from last cycle can be found here.)

Details

  1. This will be for the osu!catch mode only. Mentors who are proficient in more than one mode (example osu!standard / osu!catch) are encouraged to leave the contents of your lessons to ONLY osu!catch.
  2. This program will be aimed at mappers who have a basic grasp of the editor, so that valuable time is not wasted in teaching people the intricacies of "how to change OD or AR".
  3. Everything regarding this program is organised in one Discord server. Hint: get Discord.
  4. Mentorships are operated on a per-cycle basis as 10 weeks of lessons + 2 weeks of reorganization. The downtime allows us to make any necessary changes, reorganize things, and generally let everyone have a break.
  5. During the reorganization period, the pupil is encouraged to continue mapping, but is still free to ask questions to the mentor. Even though this time is allotted for mentors to rest, pupils should not feel discouraged to ask questions or gather opinions from their mentor.
  6. After each cycle ends, the mentor and pupil can decide whether or not they want to continue for another cycle, or take on a new pupil. Pupils who part with a mentor are still eligible for future cycles so long as they have a total of less than 3 total cycles. Keep in mind that mentors should be considering these pupils as returning participants, and consider their improvements as a mapper instead of a first impression.
  7. You must inform an Organizer or Helper of significant periods of absence. Organizers and Helpers keep track of the activity between each Mentor/Mentee pairing, so if one of them is absent for a longer timespan countermeasures can be taken. Not informing anyone about your absence can get you excluded from the current cycle.
  8. You must not be restricted from osu! when signing up for this program in any role. If you got yourself into a situation like this we do not deem you as suitable for participating in a program of this nature.
The following deadlines are fixed, there will not be any exceptions to these dates:
  1. Mentor sign-ups start on 23.04.2017 and end on 05.05.2017.
  2. Mentee sign-ups start on 07.05.2017 and end on 19.05.2017.
  3. This cycle starts on 21.05.2017 and ends on 30.07.2017.
If you have troubles with timezones, this page should give you a general idea of how this works.

Mentor Requirements

  1. Mentors will be accepted on a case-by-case basis as chosen by the Organizers and informed in both acceptance and denial. We reserve the right to choose who will be mentoring in this program and explain denials in detail for every case as well as give the applicant the chance to argue against this decision.
  2. An outline of the requisite criteria is as follows: As well as being reliable by demonstrating regular recent modding/mapping activity, you should have significant experience in either/both fields (such as one or more ranked maps and/or a reasonable amount of kudosu), have previous experience of teaching or mentoring and a positive attitude. A predictable schedule also helps!
  3. The average workload over the course of 1 week should be 2 hours. During this time, you are expected to be fully committed to your pupil in whatever way you see fit. Note that this is a minimum requirement - explaining and discussing mapping related things tends to take time.
  4. Mentors joining this cycle may choose one Mentee while Mentors from the previous cycle may choose two if they wish to. This is necessary because Mentors from previous cycles have proven to be able to commit to the program, while newcomers have not.
  5. When selecting Mentees, avoid significant timezone differences. Separations of >5 hours have proven to be very difficult to arrange productive online meetups between both parties.

    OPENS ON 23.04.2017
    CLOSES ON 05.05.2017

Mentee Requirements

  1. Prior mentees who want to be part of the program again can only do so for four times in total. This equals about a year of being on the program which should be more than enough time to get into the mapping community.
  2. Mentees who were removed from the program for any reason will not be reconsidered unless there are special circumstances. If your behaviour / general absence / lack of commitment gives us reasons to remove you will need convincing reasons to come back.
  3. Each applicant is eligible for any mentor. If a mentor who was not your first or second choice wants to mentor you, we will notify you.
  4. You should invest more time than your mentor into the program. Given that they are supposed to help you make progress this entire thing only works if you actively work on it.
  5. You must have a basic knowledge of the editor and difficulty criteria. This ensures that time is not eaten away explaining things that are easy to learn on your own, and allows you to make more rapid progress.
  6. You should be mentally prepared to know that your maps need improvement, and be open to advice and constructive criticism. Familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct for Mapping and Modding on the Ranking Criteria to know what this means.
  7. Your availability and timezone should match the Mentor(s) you are applying for. This is recommended due to being easier for both parties.

CLOSES ON 19.05.2017

Code of Conduct

  1. As a mentor, do not resort to using authority over rational arguments. We want to focus on a more "discussion" oriented view in these events. If you find yourself going against this ethos, you probably do not have good arguments to begin with. Treat everyone equally instead of assuming authority.
  2. Repeated misbehaviour on the Discord server can and will get you excluded. Though you really have to try our patience for us to do that.
  3. Make sure to drop us a message if you happen to have some things coming up which will impact your activity. Not that we are interested in your personal lives too much, we just happen to keep track of activity and progress so you disappearing without anyone knowing you did causes confusion.
  4. Please report violations of the Code of Conduct for Mapping and Modding if you encounter them. We investigate cases individually will take measures accordingly. We just cannot act if we do not know what is going on, though.
