Bless you guys for entering <3 Normally I'm supposed to make another thread for the voting part, but I'm just gonna leave the voting part here. Making a separate thread can wait until next week's submissions. Here's what's happening with voting:

  1. Everyone is able to vote. However, the participants will not be able to vote for themselves, as votes towards themselves will not count.
  2. Remember that this is not a popularity contest. It's a competition of skill.
  3. Votes will be counted by post, not poll.
  4. All votes must have a reason for their vote. You don't have to be a GFX artist to list technical reasons, of course. That said, constructive critcism is highly encouraged.
  5. One vote per person.
  6. As for me as the host, I will give my vote near the end of the voting period. I plan on making (or at least, attempting to make) evaluations for all entries except maybe my own.
  7. This isn't a required part of voting, but if you would like to suggest themes for future GFX Bimonthies, go ahead. : >
I'mma quote one of my old friends Spitty on remembering things for voting.

  1. Does the signature fit the theme?
  2. Does it look pleasing?
  3. Do you think proper techniques were used?

Voting ends March 25th! Make sure to make your votes by then!

Previous edit
Tentative title. Would appreciate suggestions for better titles. Also planned on doing this on the weekend, but let's start early, shall we?

Welcome to GFX bimonthy, where a GFX competition will take place every other week! Or at least I hope. It is heavily inspired by Signature of the Week, your run of the mill GFX contest where participants submit their GFX with a certain theme and people vote on whose is the best! Remember the following if you want to participate:

  1. Anyone can enter unless specified by me. Yes, even beginners can partipate! It's all good clean fun.
  2. Your entry must follow the theme and GFX type.
  3. Your entry must be within size limits. For this competition, the size limit is 800 px x 800 px. Of course, it can be smaller than 800 px x 800 px.
  4. Premade GFX is allowed.
  5. Work must be submitted before midnight GMT of the due date.
  6. All entries must include proof of work in the form of project files such as PSD and XCF.
  7. Plagiarism is absolutely, most definitely, and highly not allowed. You will be disqualified if I find you editing someone else's GFX without permission and banned from future competitions (if all goes well).
  8. Work must be submitted in a post here using the form below.

Theme: Freestyle/Anything Goes
GFX Type: Signature

Hmm, never thought about that. I don't see the harm in it, so I'll allow it as long as it follows the rules and theme.

Also as a general message to everyone else, y'all have less than twelve hours before submissions close and voting goes live, so any further submissions must be made by then.

ALSO HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T NOTICE UNTIL NOW I'M SO CARELESS Kamikazy's and Jay's entries are too big, but since this was something I completely overlooked until I had to check Jay's last minute resubmission for plagiarism I'll allow it ><;;

and technically sizes didn't really matter for this week so
Flanster
Gonna hop first and vote for Kurochiie's entry.

Minus points for the use of a pre-vectored character instead of using blending but no big deal. Background choice is very fitting and provides contrast. Effects contribute to amplifying the image and give it some kick. They're not overused and it doesn't feel cluttery. The mark on the eye wasn't really needed but I assume it was used for balancing the red region with a bit of blue in. Objectively it can be a nice touch. Bonus points for not using ridiculous filters like the rest, high exposure and low contrast with tons of content blended in looks like a mess. Yours is clean, while providing enough to look at. Good job.

Also not sure about the image size though, doubt you'd fit that properly in a signature/userpage :P
- K a t h -
I also vote for Kurochiie's entry~

The artwork really shows technique, specifically the lighting and depth of the image, which may normally take an average person years to master. Also the colors are well-balanced and the background supports the focal point well. And as stated by Flanster, it's clean and very nice to look at :)
JayM3_
Kurochiie will be my vote.
Hehehe,
The highlights really astonished me. Colour balance is very good too. But for me it doesn't tell a story e.g: Why is she there? What causes her to draw her sword? Why is she bleeding? Is there a bad guy? Those questions cant be answered...

But as for the rest very good job!.

For my idea for the next theme is:
B&W(Black and white) :3
Tae
Personally, I also like Kurochiie's work, and therefore they will be my vote.
Everyone has submitted some very nice work though, so I've given my opinions on each persons individually. I hope they are useful!
XxCrystal
While the colours are nice, they don't really seem to fit well together when compared to the text. Personally, I don't feel as if the font choice fits very well with the theme of the image either... that's probably just me though.
Flanster
While you do maintain a constant theme, I feel as if your choice of image for Flandre could have been improved, for example, as it does look rather strange at the moment. However, that is entirely subjective, and it's not up for me to choose what images you use :p
With the text, while I can see that you've tried to make it so that it flows with the background, it doesn't really seem to have worked, in my honest opinion. As mentioned before, this could be avoided via a use of a different image, which would also help with the colour of the font, which in it's current state, is rather odd...
mina-
I must say, I like this one c:
The colours fit well with one another, the use of layers works well, for example, with the shadow on the render on the left. I like your choice of font and colour, as it fits well with the theme of the image, and the images above it work well too!
[ LemonAdd ]
The use of colour is rather nice, and fits well with the theme you've chosen. The font used is rather nice too, but looks a little strange with the text in the background, in my opinion.
juesus
The image choice is a nice one, but does remove the attention away from the text, especially with the colour you've used for it. It also does seem to clash with the girl a bit, but this could be fixed by moving her slightly to the left(?)
[Kamikazy]
wew.
The colouration is very nice, and the blurring around the edges is a nice touch, as it brings the focus onto the centre. Your choice of font is nice and fits well with the image choice. A very nice piece of work!
JayM3_
While you do maintain a constant theme, it does look rather odd at times, I must admit. For example, the "Yukari" over the image does clash a little. I'm not sure what the pink circle things are meant to be, but they do look a little strange, personally...
Kurochiie
wow.
The colours contrast and fit well with one another, and are really attractive. The highlights on various sections of the image work really well, and the whole image is very well made!
-Haise
Your theme is consistent throughout the image, but a few things could be improved. For example, the text on the left does look a little off, you could potentially blur this to maintain focus on the centre(?)
The girl herself is...uh...brighter than my future pretty bright, you should probably tone down a little on this imo haha
The text on the lower right is rather hard to read, especially towards the far-right, and therefore loses a bit of use there, in my opinion
Reunilu
I like your choice of image and layers. The colouration of them compliments the focus of the image. Overall, it looks nice!
- K a t h -
Again, a very nice use of colour. The font is appealing, and works well with the image. I really like the use of both the notebook effect and the film reel, they are both very aesthetic. The text is nice too, and again, works well with the effects you've used (like little scribbles imo haha).
-[Jess]-
This one is nice too. The shapes are very appealing, especially with how they fade out, such as on the left. The focus is kept on the centre of the image, and the text on the right is very nice as well!
You mentioned a while back about over-editing things, which I feel you do begin to enter here though... It isn't too much of an issue here though.
- K e n -
It was really hard for me to decide
between Mina's or Kuro's work.

But yeah I have to choose one, right ? c;
So since Kuro already got a lot of votes
which is surely deserved in my opinion.

I go with Mina's work,
only because it suits into Osu
(signature/userpage size).

All of you did really great work
but these two are my absolutly favourites
and I had to decide between them.

The text on the left was supposed to be tiny c;
but yeah I should have made it at least a bit bigger.

LUL yeah idk I just thought : "let's have the girl stand out of the wallpaper."
But I guess it turned out a bit to bright xD.

Yeah I know the "headline" went pretty bad if I look at it now.
That won't happen next time :P.

Before voting, I have some word to all entries
XxCrystal
It is great for a signature tho,the text and picture fit great. But It has low pix and isn't smooth enough ,which has been the biggest problem.

Flanster
I can't give anything to this since i don't know where to start of.Choice of picture, overflow and color need improve.

Tae
It fit great,I almost thought it is a drawing. But the text seem to be weird.

mina-
It is too messy, the overflow is not great. And the color was too dark.

[ LemonAdd ]
Too blue-ish,and it was just a simple edit of picture

juesus
same as LemonAdd,but not the blue part. And the text did'n fit

[Kamikazy]
look great, the blur was good .but you can zoom more of the character.text is nice and overflow is good

JayM3_
too purple and text didn't fit good

Kurochiie
no words for this one, look great as usual.

-Haise
too bright,text didn't appear well

Reunilu
like this, but picture and texture did not fit well

- K a t h -
also no word ,both work amazing.

-[Jess]-
dat thing again
so i will vote Kuro's work, yours work is great <3
juesus
My vote is for Mina-

The size is adequate and I really like how to combine filters and patterns.
I also liked the text a lot, I thought it was appropriate.

Reminder that voting ends in about seven hours.

The submission to vote ratio seem kinda uneven, though. Do y'all need more time or do y'all just have busy work schedules?

Or it's not either and people just care about making their stuff look pretty...

Edit: Also, I changed my mind about my voting thing. Really, I just want to do an extensive critique on one of them.

My vote's for Kuro. Kuro's entry is really easy on the eyes and I'm really impressed by the lighting, something I could never figure out. Though, if there's one point of critique I have to give, it's that it's the background is a little empty. Just my opinion, though.

As for that extensive critique, I'm gonna have to give it to Jay, only because the entries (especially the second resubmission, to which I agree that this one is way better than the first submission and the first resubmission) remind me of my first year of GFX. Mostly with background building, though. The wireframes are well placed, the lighting is in its proper place, but two things: while the color scheme is simple, it also comes off as kind of boring. Second, the shadows are too dark for a lens flare like the one Jay used. Ideally, I'd also have a problem with the typography (and I do because it's in the corner and it takes away from Yuzuki Yukari's face), but I can ignore that. Based what I've seen from Jay's previous work, here's my advice:

  1. Try establishing a color palette of about two to four colors before you start. I used this quite a bit before I established my colors in my work naturally. Learning color theory also helps.
  2. Keep your C4Ds close to your focal. I know you do it in some of your work (like the Yuzuki entry), but just something to remember.
  3. Avoid using brushes too much.
  4. Try using clipping masks to help with the color scheme.
Double edit: I can't edit the OP and I'm still working on this week's prompt, so I'll give an extra day.
