I mean that this was meant to be done in osu!next in the first place, the profiles will be more customizable and we will be able to pick a background for our profile
Yes, we will be able to pick not COLLECT them. These collectible player panels would be special in some sort of way, not just some picture on the rectangle. Look at the example given in OP.(Though if the player panels will be only customizable with set pictures given by the webpage and you cant add ones yourself, supporter or not, then its fine to have them just as a rectangle picture. Since then its impossible to recreate them in anyway.)
Want this special kind of player panel? Rank 5 maps and get it.
Want this one? Get a 300pp+ score.
This one looks cool? Get 4000 combo on a ranked map.
The list can go on and on.
The point of this is to give people some sort of a reward besides pp. Something that you could show off and would make your player panel unique. These would show people how good you are at mapping, playing etc. You could make some for forums. 4000 posts and you get one. There is a lot of ways to play around with this and make it fun for players. But I strongly think there should be a way to turn them off also and have them as basic as possible for people who prefer that. This is how I imagine them working
