It means you can't just take their stuff and pretend like it's yours. I mean, why don't we take all the english animation and make them japanese? Why? Cuz their from America, not Japan.
No official dub claims the series as their own though. The owners are recognised on the disc case and credits etc. There are official Japanese dubs of american cartoons as well like My Little Pony, Southpark and The Simpsons etc. If Japanese is the superior audio language why don't you take all the american cartoons and make them Japanese?-Nya- wrote:

Oddly enough, anime in English does appeal to a few people. In fact, I first watched anime in English.
Yu-Gi-Oh & GX, Pokémon, Digimon Adventure 1 & 2, Dragonball Z, Bayblade, Inu-Yasha - all of which I watched in English... They were very enjoyable.

I can honestly say that people are going to prefer what they prefer and stick with that - this thread and the other two that I linked are proof of that. My sister's into anime WAY more than I am so I can speak with the experience that I have a sister who loves everything anime (and manga). I actually watched Inu-Yasha in Japanese (out of necessity, when 'The Final Act' just came out) and I really don't like Inu-Yasha's voice actor. He comes off as someone who sounds like they whine all the time and Richard Ian Cox (the English dub actor) comes off as more serious and mature. But that's me, that's what I prefer (in this example).
My reasoning in a general sense isn't the same as everyone else: It's not always because of the sound - though Naruto's a good example of a English dub that I can't agree with - but I'm having a hard time reading ALL the subtitles. I'm a slow reader. And when you watch action/mecha, you want to watch that in great detail (especially the ones that look good... ex: Attack on Titan, Valvrave the Liberator). Subs don't always allow for my full enjoyment of how the anime looks and that matters to me.

What's the point of a thread if no one is willinging to discuss anything. Kinda defeats the point of forum. But I know Otaku Culture loves their post once and never return threads because we love our post counts.
I generally prefer sub over dub. Occasionally I'll find a dub that I think is actually good. Rarely do I find a dub better than sub, I can only think of DBZ as a case of dub being better, but I didn't care for the series itself much. I like sub because there is usually more emotion in the VA's voice. I also get tired of hearing the same english VA over and over again.
I prefer subs ;A; Sometimes dub voices are meh ;-; and I've watched subs long enough I can see EVERYTHING going on and read the subtitles all at once ;-;

If you can handle Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei you can probably handle anything in terms of subs. I recall an episode where the fansub had two subtitle tracks on the screen at the same time for the entire episode while dialogue was fired off a at the rate the Monogatari's sometimes get to.

If its dubbed good, it works, but its rare, thus sub is the way to go usually.

I'm also not a "dude", I'm a girl, and the reason why some of the voices, not all of them, sound high-pitched sometimes is because the girls are very young, so it's actually very suitable

My big thing when it comes to typical Japanese voice acting archetypes is that there tends to typically be a more over-the-top and melodramatic timbre in vocal delivery, with the voice type relying very heavily on archetypes as well. It's not bad per se, it's just that the standouts tend to be fewer and further between (on both the extremely good and extremely bad side). I prefer my Japanese dubbing a bit more naturalistic, personally, but that very rarely happens (it comes down to script and vocal direction in that case; best examples are Beck and Paradise Kiss for me).
English dubs can have plenty of emotion, as well, but again, the adapted scripted and direction need to be there to make those emotional beats successful. It's gotten a lot better in terms of quality within the past 5 or 6 years, compared to say 10-15 years ago where we pretty much had, uh, Cowboy Bebop for really fantastic dubs.
by watchin subs, you can learn japanese by reading the subtitles while hear the original voice. and can still enjoy the story. even if it's not significant at least we can know some japanese vocabulary

I feel this is a point against subs because it just causes people to drop Japanese words into otherwise completely English (or other language) sentences. Then you also get those sub groups that choose to keep certain words untranslated, sure you pick them up if you watch enough but it is really only unhelpful to new fans while providing nothing to more experienced fans aside maybe stroking their egos.Flying Pan wrote:

I feel if you learned Japanese exclusively from subbed anime you'd get your point across by just chanting kawaii or moe. Alongside actual lessons is probably fair though.
