Also replace these files with a 1*1 transparent png :

These are the "particles" introduced in the newer version of the default skin, few to no skins use them though

star2@2x. png
These are responsible for the particle fest on kiai time, which might be what you are talking about. They are displayed even with all fancy settings turned off, so you might want to try that if the solution in the previous post didn't work.
