I've seen alot of questions roaming around the internet on what makes an "Anime" an "Anime"

For example. Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. Is it an anime? Discuss

From Japanese アニメ (anime), an abbreviation of アニメーション (animēshon), from English animation.
/ænɪmeɪ/
(countable) An animated work originated in Japan, regardless of the artistic style.

There is a problem with that classification.

What if Japanese people made an anime in UK, is that called anime??

Anyways, open up some arguments

......Origination is still Japan isn't it? Since Japanese people. Not like it was by some Englishman.

anything but boku no pico is an anime
silmarilen
my little pony is an anime

Depends on how anime-ish it is, I wouldn't want to call a too realistic drawn one an anime (eg DBZ, Death Note, SnK). And plus, anime have to be in Japanese.

have you ever seen dragonball z

An animated work originated in Japan, regardless of the artistic style. It's from JAPAN. The meaning just crumbles down with that reasoning for your own

unless the anime is windy tales or sora no otoshimono, then that rule rules out everything

What the Fark. It doesn't crumble. So an American decides to invent something and he isn't in the States, it doesn't become an invention from USA? Japanese is Japanese. He comes from Japan, its origin is Japan.

I'm confused. The rule says AS LONG AS IT CAME FROM JAPAN right, no exceptions. That's the small bubble that pops through. And then you said it's still an anime because japanese people created it in the UK. The rule crumbles down in my opinion

Calm down.

I always thought anime was restricted only to Japanese-produced animation, regardless of the animation style. Is P&S an anime? Yes, because it's produced in Japan, but I wouldn't consider a TV show like Avatar: The Air Bender anime, even though it looks like one, because it was produced in America. If I remember correctly, there was this one French animated TV series that collaborated with Japanese people (or studios), but it was still considered a "cartoon".

an·i·me - /ˈanəˌmā/ noun 1. a style of Japanese film and
television animation, typically aimed
at adults as well as children.
---> not complete but I think this is a fine definition. I hope it satisfies OP's confusion.
Just use our common sense and stop paying close attention to small details. I don't think we'll get anywhere by doing that with this kind of matter this broad.
We're not some kinda god to be capable of ruling everything out in complete order, as long as there're rules there're contradictions.

Anime is the cartoon animation made in japan, For instance Avatar (the american cartoon) has an anime style, the plot, characters, drawings, and many characteristics of typical anime are there. Avatar is considered an anime to me, so an anime would be any animation which has the characteristics of the japanese animation, which is a certain drawing style, a specific type of humour, characters and such. I mean c´mon if you watch anime you know what i mean. Anyone can freaking tell an anime from a cartoon like South Park. My little pony is not an anime, Pokemon is...

There's only a very few people who'd consider a 3D American action movie whatever an anime like you. Anime IN GENERAL must be 2D Japanese.
And could we by any chance take it like this: It's an anime if it has an entry on MAL 'cuz it's considered an anime by the majority of people.
Ichi
You can tell if it's an anime or not, the way characters react, their expressions, I think it goes further than to what they look like at this point. The new dbz movie, has some nice 3d Bullshit going there and you're gonna tell me it's not anime? Plus I never said if the majority of people say it's anime then it is, you watch anime so you know what they look like, there are obviously common elements that surround every anime, if it has most of them then it's probably an anime, not necessarily but high chance.
Anyway I think you've got mixed up here I was talking about avatar: the last Airbender. Of course the American movie is nowhere being anime

if it's animation produced by the Japanese it's "anime"

note: Japanese call all animation "anime" and it's understandable if you call all animation "cartoon" instead of making a distinction. But for the sake of this thread, yeah, it's animation created by the Japanese

Sounds pretty ridiculous but... what if it's made in Japan by Chinese who can speak the native level Japanese and imitate anime style of drawing & animation to the point you can't tell any difference? Would you expect people to say it's not an anime?

Personally, I'd say it's each person's perspective that really matters, every one may think of anime differently on their own way. So I can say that there's no way DBZ & SnK would be anime in my freaking opinion.

Yeah, I know they are. Just that I dislike them and said that on a whim cuz they're not that great yet too popular.

I don't even think it's even worth to be discussed.
Imagine there are 4 islands in the Pacific which make the nation of Japan. This nation has its own animated cartoon industry. From Hamtaro to GANTZ, all is popular worldwide. Transliterate the word "animation" in katakana, then leave first three syllables.
Then, pick the most common style features of Japanese animation, and find the art with that style.
If you can, learn or draw in that style.
That's anime.
