I am a new user and just downloaded the game and set it up. I had no issues playing the tutorial song, but whenever I try to install a new song, the game says it is updating the music library, but then always says it was unable to load any of the songs. Is it an error with the maps I download or is it because I am playing this on a mac

On the OSX testing release forum post (here) it says it might get stuck loading maps the normal way. Try the method of dropping the .osz straight into the songs folder inside the osu!.app itself.
If it still doesn't work, post a screenshot of it (Command+Shift+3 if my memory serves correctly) and we'll find another solution. This is not the signature you are looking for.
