Now, if you're reading into this, you probably already know what it is. But for the people who don't, definitely worth checking into. Ubuntu is a free, Debian-based Linux distro that is great for people of all technological and Linux skill levels. It functions as a very efficient alternative to Windows, in my personal opinion.

( NOTE: Keep in mind that if you don't really know too much about Linux or computers in general, then this OS will be a serious wake-up call. If you install, compile, or do anything with Ubuntu that messes up anything on your computer, I'm not responsible! I just gave you this link. )

Oh, and by the way, you can't run osu! on this without WiNE, a Windows software emulator. Even then, it's a pain to get it running and I have yet to be successful. A lot of video tweaking. Maybe with peppy's permission in the future, we could see a proper Linux port, but that's neither here nor there..

With osu! being reliant on the .NET Framework (v2.0), the only way to get a "native" port is via the Mono project. Unfortunately, they are yet to complete v2 functionality, nor have the required DirectX libraries been made available. There are projects underway for both of these, but don't seem to be moving so fast.

Yeah, Mono looks nice but it's still waaaay off for that to happen. Oh well.

EDIT: Actually, newer builds of WineX support have basic DX9.0 libraries supported, so now all we need would be a more advanced .NET transliteration framework and we could run a basic build of osu! on Linux. Of course, certain codec support and vertex shading would have to wait.
