Both are solidly above mediocre.

School Days is based on a visual novel known for it's gruesome endings it would be stupid for it to not adapt one plus defeat the entire point of the series. Since you clearly missed it "Not choosing is also a choice," being a dumb indecisive prick is not going to net you a bunch of girls at your beck and call. School Days is not an escapist fantasy series it is a criticism of them. The fact it still comes up shows it is still relevant but how many Harem shows from that era have you heard of let alone watched?

Happy Sugar Life is perfectly fine as well, although it deals it's hand too soon and could have explored the perpetuation of abuse and trauma better. The nods to Ikuhara particularly Utena and exploring the concept of corrupted love are good too. Seems odd that with tho popularity of stuff like Goblin Slayer and Tokyo Ghoul people are happy to see anime go to dark places but as soon as a protagonist has poor morals it gets shrieked as being the worst show ever.
