[resolved] osu! client & installer won't open at all

Problem Details:

So after a 5-6 month break I decided to install osu! once again. (The game was taking a massive chunk of my hard drive and I wasn't sure when I'll play the game again so I decided to uninstall it for the time being). I downloaded the installer as usual but this time it doesn't open at all. The cursor changes for a second or two to indicate that something is happening but then turns back to normal. The Task Manager suggests that the game might be crashing on startup as it pops up on the list but then immediately disappears. After a lot of attempts to fix my problem with the newer installer, I went to the website and downloaded the old installer - it worked perfectly. I opened osu! and was greeted with the usual login screen. Here's where things went wrong - I decided to update the game since the game version was at least 2-3 years old. The game close itself to restart and then nothing...

Ways I've tried fixing the issue:

  1. Using the repair tool. Guess what - it also doesn't want to open itself
  2. Running all of the above(client, installer and repair tool) as an administrator
  3. Updating & Reinstalling the latest graphics card drivers
  4. Fixing the system's registries using CCleaner
  5. .NET Framework Repair tool - it only reregisters and restarts the Windows Installer service
  6. Updating to the latest version of .NET Framework[4.7.2] - It blocks my installer with the message that a higher version of the framework is already installed. The registry on my system pretty much confirms that the latest version of .NET Framework is already on the system(I guess pre-installed by the latest Windows updates)
  7. Stopping my antivirus (I'm using Avira if that is of any significance)
  8. Disabling Threaded optimization in the Nvidia settings - It was already disabled
  9. Running the client,installer and repair tool in compatibility mode
  10. Closing all programs that might interfere in any way possible with the launch of the game, installer and repair tool
  11. Reinstalling the .NET Framework - Disabling .NET Framework from Turn Windows Features on and off and running Windows Update


I think that's everything I tried doing. I might be missing one or two things but that what comes to mind at the moment. I also want to point out that .NET Framework 4.7.2 is not listed on the programs list - I guess because it's installed by Windows and the list shows only user installed programs. In addition, as a beginner/intermediate programmer, I have a bunch of SDKs, IDEs and other miscellaneous software installed, including Visual Studio Community 2017 and VS Code that might in some shape or form interfere with .NET Framework versions. I'm not sure about this one in particular but it doesn't hurt anyone by pointing out potentially important details.

All suggestions would be extremely helpful. I have no idea what to do so I'm hoping that experienced individuals(most likely the support team) will be able to help. Reinstalling Windows could potentially fix this, but I want to know that I have no other options as it is a burdensome job.

most common fixes i found are the following:

  1. update your windows
  2. try disabling your anti-virus (you did this already, its for future reference)
  3. register the dll file with windows. command prompt (as admin) and type regsvr32 KernelBase.dll then reboot
  4. this one is a pain, create a new user account and try the game from there. if it works, you likely have a corrupted profile which can cause the KernelBase.dll file error.

Update: I managed to fix my issue. This thread can be marked as resolved. And while I'm writing this, I might as well explain what I tried and what eventually fixed it for me.

Fixes/Solutions that didn't work for me:

  1. Updating Windows. It was basically already on the latest version. More information down below...
  2. My antivirus didn't seem to be the issue as well.
  3. I tried registering the dll file in Command Prompt but was greeted with a rather nasty message: 'The module "KernelBase.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "KernelBase.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.'

    Both unregistering and reregistering of the kernelbase.dll resulted in the same message.
  4. I tried using sfc /scannow as an attempt to fix the issue above. I ran it 5-6 times but no integrity violations were found.
  5. Scanning my PC for viruses and malware ended up nowhere as there were 0 detections. (I used both MalwareBytes and Avira)
  6. I noticed that Windows Update returns an error(0x80248007) when trying to update my printer drivers so I ended up deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarting the Windows Update service. Success! ...sort of... Windows Update found and installed a new Windows version... but that didn't fix my problem
  7. I found this article and started following the instructions. A lot of the steps resulted in nothing and I decided that performing a repair upgrade on Windows might be the only solution(reinstalling Windows whilst keeping my files and apps).


DING DING DING I reinstalled Windows(without doing a clean install) and after waiting for an hour and a half I tried installing osu! again and it ran as it should have in the first place. Interestingly enough, the error message still pops up when using regsvr32 KernelBase.dll. I did spent more hours than I would like to admit trying to solve it and I hope it was all worth it.

You should not be manually running regsvr32. And es, this is the result of a corrupt windows/.net install. You should probably run a virus checker because that is a common cause of issues like this.
