It was intended as a joke, but there's no doubt that Western parents are more lax when it comes to education. My parents give me more freedom as I get older, but they're always there to remind me studies come first. That, personally, is the parenting I love.
But if I were to choose an extreme, I'd take Asian parenting 100%. Better to have no freedom than absolute freedom and having all that crash on you when you reach adulthood if you have no self-control. And I have sub-par control when it comes to computers v.s. absolutely anything |

So the way of parenting that you so much love in fact ruins people in that term. The best way to learn self-control is to live freely and learning to control yourself BY yourself. WHICH IS. BEING A HUGE STRONG GUY WITH ENORMOUS POWERFUL MUSCLES! |

I see, correct me if I'm wrong, but your "freedom" seems to be really absolute, like paying your own bills and such. That easily teaches you self-control since you'd be starving if you lacked it. But for those underage, they still get help from their parents, and with someone to back them up, they can't learn self-control because they aren't truly free. In that case, someone that provides some means of control would help.
