There are night kills. The goal is to help the king figure out who the assassins are so they can execute them.

The point of voting is to help the king decide who to kill each day. Of course, this also means that if the king thinks that a bandwagon was started by mafia, for example, they can ignore the votes and kill whoever started the bandwagon instead. Voting also helps the kingmaker choose who the king should be each day; if somebody votes for someone and that someone flips scum, then that somebody is a good candidate for king.
