Here's an unofficial update to the osu! OSX package. This is a direct replacement for the official osu! Wineskin package that can be found here: http://osuosx.tumblr.com

Video tutorial: https://youtu.be/3ay221bMHNo (feel free to turn on x2 speed)

Note: The wineskin will not work on macOS Catalina. Either refrain from updating or consider using boot camp, a virtual machine, using opsu! (https://itdelatrisu.github.io/opsu/), or switching to osu!Lazer.
Experimental macOS Catalina Build: community/forums/posts/7367239

It has several improvements and fixes several issues (in comparison to the official Wineskin package) including (but not exhaustive):
  1. Fixes game not launching on High Sierra
  2. Reduces input lag
  3. Reduces frame drops
  4. Increases FPS
  5. Removes the need for XQuartz
  6. Prevents f.lux temporarily disabling when switching windows
  7. Smoother opening of beatmaps
  8. Fixes erratic unfocusing of cursor when using keyboard to tap due to Location Services
  9. Allows swiping to switch between windows
  10. Fixes black screen issue with dual or more monitor setups
  11. Fixes minimising of osu! when focus changes

Alternative wineskins:
The following wineskins may be more up to date or work better for you.
Mic238 (July 2018): https://github.com/Mic238/osu-for-Mac-Stable-Latest
slc (December 2018): https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/posts/6919344
peppy (July 2019): https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/posts/7140911
Note: For peppy's Wineskin, if it fails to open, you must run sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine 'osu!.app' in Terminal. See the osu! or Wineskin will not open! of my guide for more details.

If you're uncomfortable with using a file downloaded from a complete stranger (and you should be) you can follow my guide here to obtain (mostly) the same Wineskin package.
[Guide] Fixing Mac Issues: https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205

How to install

Steps
  1. First you'll need to save your osu! data so you can transfer it over later. See my guide here on How to do a data backup (apply it on the old osu! app): https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205
  2. Download the package from the previously shown download link
  3. Extract the .zip file
  4. Move the osu! application out of the Downloads folder otherwise it will not start properly
  5. Right click on the osu! app and click Open. The osu! updater should run and start osu! after a while
  6. Close osu!
  7. See my guide here on How to restore a data backup (apply it on the downloaded osu! app): https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205
Now you can move the downloaded osu! application anywhere you want and it should work fine.

Having trouble opening osu!? See my troubleshooting tool: community/forums/topics/1036678.
Do not enable compatibility mode. It will break the wrapper.

If you are having issues after you see the osu! logo/updater please include the osu! updater logs found in osu! > Logs.

If you are having issues before you see the osu! logo/updater please include the Wineskin test run logs found after running a test run. (osu! > Open Package Contents > Wineskin > Advanced > Test Run)

Discord Rich Presence
For Discord Rich Presence to work you'll need to replace the discord-rpc.dll file located in the drive_c folder. (Thanks to slc for pointing out the alternatiave dll file)

Steps:
  1. Download xnu-discord-rpc.dll from this guy here: https://github.com/goeo-/discord-rpc/releases (If you have a Github account considering starring the fork)
  2. Navigate to the drive_c folder (Right click osu! > Show Package Contents > drive_c)
  3. Navigate to the osu! folder
  4. Delete the existing discord-rpc.dll file
  5. Drag the xnu-discord-rpc.dll file into it and rename it to discord-rpc.dll

Troubleshooting
For those that are unable to open the osu!.exe file, such as nothing popping up, try moving the zip file (NOTE: Not the application, but the zip file containing the application) to another location, such as your Desktop or the Documents folder. Then, right click the application and select "Open". While this may seem redundant, this has a different effect to directly double clicking the file.

If Wineskin (the program inside the wrapper) refuses to open then make sure that you open osu! (the entire wrapper) at least once (so that it can get past the "Verifying osu! application" stage). osu! doesn't need to run, it just needs to get past the verification stage.

To update the osu!.exe contained within the wrapper, right click the wrapper and select: Show Package Contents, then Contents > Resources > drive_c > osu! folder.
Download the latest osu!.exe for Windows from the osu! website and then replace the osu!.exe in the folder with the downloaded one.

Razer Synapse may prevent osu! from opening. If this happens you need to quit Razer Synapse before opening osu!.

If nothing else works, try the steps in the section osu! or Wineskin will not open! from my guide: https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205.

Please note that if I do not reply to your post, I either do not know how to fix your problem or you haven't provided enough information.

Damn, I was just working on an updated wineskin today! Looks like you may have done my work for me. Will give this a going over tonight.

Are you okay with us using this as an official download if everything checks out?

Yes, absolutely!

Thanks for the updated wrapper!

I did note some small problems, at least with my install (running macOS 10.13.2 on a MacBook Pro Mid-2012)

- Game may lock when switching through beatmaps at a very specific speed, faster and it works okay, slower and no problems.
- Shaders still don't work, the screen turns black whenever they should activate.
- Framerate lag depends on the amount of objects on the screen at the same time. Maps with high object count play better when the objects appear and disappear fast, as opposed to staying longer on the screen (not very noticeable though)

I upgraded to a dual screen boot and it's showing up as a black screen on both fullscreen (with and without letterboxing) and windowed mode.
I tried changing the regedit file as shown here but it still does not work.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Edit: Downloading it for the first time resulted in a playable osu! screen. However, when I imported my old files and restarted osu!, the screen goes black.

nvm fixed it by just copying the skins and songs folder (and nothing else)

I'm rather sceptical about using this as an official build. Maybe provide changelog for the changes made to the wrapper?
Kondou-Shinichi
working good. thanks!

These issues were present with the official Wineskin wrapper and I currently have no idea how to fix them.

All the changes made to the official wrapper can be found in my Fixing Mac Issues thread: https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205
This Wineskin wrapper simply collates all the changes for convenience. I don't see the need for a changelog at the moment.

Thank you very very much.
osu! won't start! Help!
I've tried everything according to the guide about the osu! won't start, it still doesn't work, the osu! logo only pops up on the dock but disappears afterwards.

Can you right click osu! and click Open Package Contents and double click on Wineskin. Click Advanced > Test Run. Paste the contents the the test run logs here.

Edit: Make sure the you have moved the osu! application out of the Downloads folder otherwise Filevault will prevent it from working properly.

That's an... extremely strange error to be getting. It looks like Wineskin cannot find the osu!.exe file.

1. Open Wineskin > Advanced
2. Click Browse (on the right of Windows EXE)
3. You'll need to find osu!.exe; The current directory should be drive_c so osu!.exe is in the osu! folder
4. Double click on osu!.exe to select it

If you're still having issues after this try checking Use Start.exe. (Under the Windows EXE textbox). Additionally, please tell me what version of OSX you have because the logs don't show it.
Renzu
I use 10.9.2 Mavericks
Oh well, it didn't work, I guess I'll just stick with 2015 stable version until the new one will get stable.

For me On Mac Os High sierra 10.13.2 .
- Your Osu is launching Updating and when Osu logo appear it's froze and don't start . Weirdo

Ahh, you're in osu!dev so I'll assume you're more technically versed. Can you paste the contents of the osu! updater logs? (or put it into a gist/pastebin)

Everything works but osu is extremely laggy. Any ideas on how to fix this? :/

I'm not aware of any performance improvements that can be made by Wine directly; Your best bet is to disable as much stuff as possible ingame. Alternatively, if you don't have a dual monitor setup you may consider reenabling CaptureDisplaysForFullscreen. The steps are in my guide: https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/679205 under "Help! I'm running a dual monitor setup and osu! blacks out my other screen!". Just be sure to type "Y" instead of "n" in the text box.

I'm going to begin processing this change over at github for official release. I welcome any contributions in reviewing or reducing cruft: https://github.com/ppy/osu-wine/pull/16
