Just getting into osu after a 3 month break, and realised I have sorta been at the same skill level for nearly half a year. This is probably because of my inactivity but I think some of it has to do with playing maps that aren't really that challenging but just spamming my retry keybind until I fullcombo. I mostly play 4-4.5 maps and fc most songs in that range if I have enough time, but I don't think this is optimal as I have decided I want to focus on improving rather than going for pp. Should I be playing maps I can barely pass or staying with maps at the current difficulty I am playing at?

try playing 4.5-5.5 star maps in that range. Do NF though. Took me a month to adjust from 4 stars to 5 stars.
as for maps I tend to consult to Tillerino. Remove that retry mindset. I experienced it too. It plagued me so much even to this day. Retry retry until you succeed but in the long run it messes you up.
I'd recommend playing loved maps or unranked maps so you could think of actually achieving a decent score rather than just for PP.
But don't push yourself too hard.
EDIT: You should try focusing on increasing your accuracy

Stop doing this. This will not make you better. The only time you should be retrying songs is when you mess up at the very start. Otherwise, you are a) going to make yourself impatient/neurotic and therefore play worse and b) set yourself up to choke all the time by being really good at the start and complete shit at the end because of your imbalance in practice across the map.Wasard wrote:

Playing songs you can barely play only causes you to build bad habits and hurt your body. But most importantly, stop thinking about improving and focus on having fun over trying to force success. That is the path to actually getting good. You will not play mindfully unless you lose yourself in what you are doing.

Download a lot of 4 star maps, star>4 star<5 and press F2 and play.

I thought Tillerino was used to find maps that will give you pp? This definitely helped though, it's been a couple of days but I am starting to notice my improvement.

4/5 of my top 5 scores are 4.4* or above???
Going for SS scores will only improve my accuracy, and is basically what I was doing but before but even worse. The thing I find out fun about osu! is improvement so that doesn't really apply to me.
