I don't mind first timers entering all that much, myself. The 3-4 poorly made maps I received were a good way to get me started on judging, because I knew it wouldn't matter if I was 3-4 points off until I hit my stride as a judge again; if everything was up top, I'd be terrified of the 1-2 points that could cost a map first place. In other words, they served as a good warm-up. Plus, they have a chance to receive in-depth advice on their map-making technique without placing any stress on us or themselves to rank their map. Basically, it's one free mod from BATs.

I guess Zerostarry is annoyed at those mappers entering the contest with a motive of getting a "freebie mod", which I kind of find understandable, but I'd like to believe people interested enough to enter a contest have the dedication to make really good maps, so our pointers will only improve their mapping...at least my long-winded ones aimed in that direction. Comments like "bad" or "it sucks" would be less helpful, I imagine.

I remember this in chat.

04:56 <@ppy> you give them an essay
04:57 < Sinistro> the great part is that I can NOT use less words
04:57 < Sinistro> it seriously takes that much words to describe what's wrong
04:57 < Sinistro> and why it's bad
04:58 < Sinistro> for example...
04:58 < Sinistro> [...] (message truncated)
04:58 < Sinistro> see, it becomes bigger by the second
04:58 < Sinistro> [...] (message truncated)
04:58 < Larto> message trunacted
04:58 < Larto> message truncated
04:58 < Larto> oh god

... :P

The part that was truncated on the first line was, like, two words. Pfft.

OK, the second one was too big by about a line or so, but still, it wasn't that big.

...

(That's what she said!)

Meh, I joined just because I wanted constructive criticism on my mapping as you rarely never get it trough mapping.

It's pretty stupid if you would stop first timers to join when they can get much better by joining (And they don't have to worry about timing or anything here)

I'd be more than willing to give more in-depth details about the maps after the contest is over, should the mapper wish for it. I don't have time to write a novel on every map right now.

Eventually, but the winning maps must be ranked before any of the non-winning maps can be looked at

Hopefully I'll have results for you all soon. There are only a few judges left who aren't done
