[Archived] Stuttering during gameplay

Problem Details: Very recently osu has been stuttering at random points during beatmaps while I'm playing. I don't remember changing anything in the settings which is why I don't know why it is happening all of a sudden. It is becoming a big problem for me because it is messing up a lot of my scores, so I would appreciate any help I can get.

What do you mean by stuttering , like fps drops / screen freezes?

There isn't anything wrong with my fps, when it happens the whole screen freezes for a second and my fps stays the same.

Might it be your graphics card or sound card? If it repeats like a broken record, that might be it, if thats what you mean by stuttering.

I'm not sure if it is my graphics or sound card, but I never had any problems like this in the past and I have been using them for a long time now.

Try recording the stuttering.
Have you had any large programs opened in the back?

I guess I can try recording it. All I have running in the background is skype.

That might be it. Skype is a pretty big program. Try closing skype, and run osu again.

I just remembered I also had steam running in the background. After I closed steam and skype I'm pretty sure it works fine now. Thanks for the help!

does it persist in full screen or a higher fps limiter?
are the stutters consistent
does it happen often?

does your PC have a mid-high spec?

If so, then i believe it's quite normal, stuttering is happening every now & then. afaik It's still a mysterious issue & potentially not a bug

I'm not sure if it's normal, because it happens pretty often (once every other map up to multiple times in a single map) I play in fullscreen because my fps is much higher than in windowed and I have my frame limiter on unlimited... Is that bad?

OS have nothing to do with this. This happens on Win 7, Win Vista, Win 8, Win 8.1

not sure about Mac though

Different OS, different behavior. Each one has it's own unique problems.

The occassional stutter is quite normal in osu I think, but during gameplay can be quite annoying. It's most likely caused by lack of resources or overheating

Just a few ideas:
- Use task manager (assuming you're using windows) to check cpu usage + physical usage to identify any problems
- Check temperature of computer (possibly using a program such as speedfan). If temps are a problem (typically GPU going above 90*C or CPU above say 60*C), check internal fans and make sure they are working (could be blocked by dust)
- Are you running off an external drive? If so try running from an internal drive

If you try all of these and no results, try lowering settings and/or monitoring GPU usage using a program like MSI afterburner

I don't know if your stuttering in the same as mine but I am having the same problem. and It's frustrating.
