Something new I'm going to try to see what techniques in mapping players like and don't like.
Round 1: 'back and forth' beats ![]() Something a bit general to start off with. This is usually 3 or more beats arranged so that the 3rd beat and onward alternate from where 1 and 2 were located. Many maps have this in one form or another, usually arranged horizontally or vertically. I have a bunch of other techniques in mind, but if there's a technique you would like to see in a future poll, I will take nominations provided you give me: 1. A name for the technique (it can be an official name or one you make up) 2. An accurate description of the technique (or alternatively, a screenshot of the technique) 3. A ranked map that has the technique so I can see it in action. Viva la Cobra!

Derekku Chan wrote: My favorite usage of this, though, is when there's a pattern like: Left, middle, top, middle, right, middle, bottom, middle in a + pattern. Those are always cool~ E.g. Cross Time. I love them too. I'm not sure what to vote because I don't think the scale is well-defined. I guess I will vote it a three, because I like this being used at times (e.g. Cross Time) but it's not something which can fit in ever map (or even half the maps) well. It's also not as easy to read as other patterns (e.g. zig-zags). EDIT: OP, please allow votes to be changed. Thanks! |

These are a fun pattern when used right.

Ekaru wrote: P.S. I don't consider what Derek described "back and forth" beats. I consider them in a different category: "back to the center". It's a variation, but it plays much differently, differently enough for me to consider it a different thing. Example of this is Biggest Dreamer's Normal, you should see it around the start of the chorus IIRC. To make a full "+" four back-forths have to be used. I think it's well qualified as being the same technique. |

I rated 4. I don't use it too much, but I like it.
1. Emm... kiou2's sliders? 2. ![]() 3. Boozehound [Kiou2's Normal] or any kiou2's map. Adjust guidelines to your map, don't adjust your map to the guidelines.

I never said it was a different technique, I said it was a variation. I consider back and forth going back and forth and back and forth, while "back to the center" is where you keep on going back to the center, but the hit circle other than the center is in a different spot each time. One is boring when it goes on for more than a beat or two, one isn't. It's a different usage and it's different enough for me to count it as something different. EDIT: 1. Half-backing 2. Two hit circles are one beat apart. Another hit circle a half-beat after the second circle is situated between those two. 3. http://osu.ppy.sh/s/6301 <-- Hard uses this a lot. While we're on this, why not suggest something similar to it, but quite different?
