There have been some requests, and some attempts at unofficial contests, so it looks like it's time for another official osu! beatmapping contest! This one has a couple new twists, and the song selection has been tweaked more toward mappable songs, so I look forward to seeing excellent results!

Results are in! Click to check them out!

Here's what's new:
  • Each map has its own team of judges.
  • Each entry will be scored against a specific set of criteria, which will be outlined below.
  • After this contest is over, the winning mapsets will be used as the base for a storyboarding contest.
  • A pretty epic prize, read on

Here are the rules:
  • Anyone can participate!
  • There are three songs to choose from. You can submit entries for more than one song, but you can only win one prize.
  • In the event of a tie, the head judge for that song will have the tie-breaking vote.
  • For each song that you map, you must submit three difficulties.
  • No collab maps or guest difficulties. One mapper per entry, please.
  • No storyboard, skinning, custom hitsounds, BG image, or "preferred skin" choices will be allowed in this contest.
  • No CtB-only or Taiko-only maps in this contest either, for the sake of consistency.
  • Do not post, submit, or otherwise publicly share your map before the contest ends, to maintain anonymity of the entries.
  • Once again, DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR MAP VIA THE EDITOR. Any map found to have been publicly uploaded will be disqualified.

How to Enter:
  • Choose a song from the contest page, and download the base osz file.
  • Use the music and timing provided in the osz file to create three difficulties for the map. You can tweak timing if you feel the need.
  • When you are finished, upload your three .osu files into the submission form via the contest page.
  • Do not include your name in the comments when submitting your map (your name will be removed automatically from the .osu files).
  • If you make changes after you've submitted, you can re-enter your maps for the same song, and the entry will update.

    Judges:
    • Head Judge: Cyclone
    • Lybydose
    • Sinistro

The Judging Criteria:

  1. Technical Skill. Does this map meet all the rankability guidelines? If it breaks any of the guidelines, there should be a clear reason why, and the map should actually benefit from this. There shouldn't be any misplaced objects in symmetry, line, or grid patterns, and sliders should be shaped attractively. Patterns shouldn't be unnecessarily crowded and overlapping without purpose.

  2. Creativity. Does this map capture interest? Patterns should be clever, have character, and be memorable. If the player can't recall any of the shapes used in the map after playing it, it needs work! Also please remember that not all forms of creativity are good--for instance, misplaced zoom sliders or streams during a ballad may be unusual, but they won't help your score.

  3. Difficulty Curve. Can this mapset be enjoyed by all levels of osu! players? The difficulty of a single map should remain consistent, whilst the set should provide a steady difficulty curve without any large gaps which could alientate groups of players at certain skill levels. The overall "feel" of the mapset should be consistent across all difficulties.

  4. Flow and Structure. Does the map make sense? The mouse movements, regardless of difficulty, should feel natural to the player. Choice of patterns, both in terms of the kinds of patterns used and their repetition, should match with the music. The rhythms should fit the music, though not necessarily rigorously synchronize to it. Rhythm and shaping should play off each other to create a cohesive experience.

  5. Judge's Impression. Was the map fun to play? This is more or less an overall opinion without getting too nitpicky.

The Deadline:
  • The contest will end on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Midnight (UTC time)
  • To be clear, the contest ends at midnight on the evening of the 15th, in the UTC (GMT) time zone.
  • That is roughly 45 days from the time of this posting. A countdown clock can be viewed here.
  • When the deadline has passed, the submission form will be closed and no further entries can be accepted.

The Prizes:
  • There will be one first-place winner, and two runners-up, per song.
  • Each first-place winner can choose to receive a Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet or an otamatone novelty musical instrument!*

  • Each first-place winner will also get an "Elite Mapper" forum title, a 6-month supporter tag, and a shiny profile badge.
  • Each second-place runner-up will receive a 3-month supporter tag.
  • Each third-place runner-up will receive a 1-month supporter tag.

And that's it! Good luck to all mappers, and let me know if you have any questions!

*If Amazon.com does not ship to your country, arrangements will be made to get your cool prize to you some other way.
*We're not affiliated with Wacom or otamatone or anything, we're just going to buy you one because you're awesome.
*If you are under 13, or choose not to disclose your address, you may receive an extra year of supporter status instead of a physical prize.

And this will be the first time I finish a map. 10 years with my Graphire 4 has taken its toll. The clay is deteriorating.

Time to win something.

Yeah sorry about shafting the taiko mappers again :( There will have to be an all-taiko mapping competition at some point.

A TaikOsu map would be eligible to win, as long as it's playable (and fun...) in osu! standard mode

You can map as much or as little as you deem appropriate, but that mp3 already been trimmed down to around 2:30 for you.
