Introduction



Hello! And welcome to what we hope will be the final iteration of a structured system of modding for people here in the Catch the Beat osu!catch community. Recently, we've all felt the pressure and constantly increasing difficulty of getting our maps ranked, or more importantly, modded, due to the ever decreasing number of active BN's (Spec quitting, Sey disappearing from the face of the earth, etc.) and the increasing weight on our current nominators' shoulders. By creating this group, we want to enjoy the successes of the past 3 groups: CTB Modding Association, the CTB Modding Academy, and the CTB Modding Group. All of these, in one way or another have been lead to failure due to inactivity, a general dispersing of members, or a less structured format. Hopefully, by addressing these failures in the past, and finally creating a united group among CTB modders, we hope to share this experience with the rest of the mapping scene in creating a more healthy environment for mappers, modders, and nominators alike.

How the ladder system works and how to join it



Format: The group will look to use a ladder system in which all modders can properly be accommodated for at their appropriate skill level. Currently, the ladder stands as such. Tier 1, AKA the lowest rung of the ladder, will consist of people who have applied to join - Magic Bomb -'s new Modding Academy, for people looking to start off in modding or fortify their knowledge of it before being pushed into the actual scene. Tier 2 will consist of your everyday, standard modder. To get into this level, you'll be checked to ensure your mods are of a quality that is acceptable at this level. If not, you'll be moved to Tier 1, regardless of if you're in the modding academy or not. Tier 3 will consist of Beatmap Nominators and Quality Assurance Team members, who will be there to make the final push of your map to a rankable state, should your map make it that far.

How to join: Similar to the Beatmap Nominator Exam, you'll be submitting 2-3 of your BEST mods for review by current Nominators / QAT's in the group. The tier you are placed in is up to the discretion of the Nominator or the QAT that looks at your application. It should be noted that more than one nominator will be looking at your submissions in order to reduce bias. After judging the quality of your mods, we'll put you in either Tier 1 (if your mods didn't reach a high enough quality of an "experienced" modder), or Tier 2 (if your mods were at an acceptable quality for us to place you higher). This will be done through a google form once the group is set up.

The system itself:
  1. The system will implement an "application pool" style, in which mappers will submit their maps for review from group members. This will run on a per-round basis, meaning that the group will go through cycles. For non-members, you will be allowed to submit one map, every other cycle. As for group members, you will be allowed to submit one map every cycle.
  2. The person who submits the mapset to the group must be the primary creator - For own sets it must be the uploader. For sets with GDs, any person who created a CtB difficulty may submit. Each mapper may make one submission every other cycle.
  3. When submitting a map to the queue, you must also submit a complete CTB mod (one that is recent, within 2 weeks of your submission) on a map of your choosing. This is so we can be sure that you are willing to give back to the community when receiving mods.
  4. Once your map is accepted, you will also be required to mod ONE MORE map, located on a "special list" in the queue. After modding this, your map will begin its cycle through the system.
  5. At the start of each round, accepted maps will be allocated into appropriate levels on the ladder by the nominators depending on their initial quality and potential.
  6. Maps will be modded by all members at a particular level that express an interest in modding it before a consensus is reached on whether the map should progress up the ladder.
  7. If one group deem a map to be fit to move up the ladder, it will progress and the modding cycle repeats. The next group will either mod or decline the map (if it fails to meet their required standards). In this case a short explanation of why it was rejected will be provided with suggestions for improvement.
  8. Maps will continue to progress up the ladder until they are either qualified or rejected. Returning mappers may reapply after waiting a minimum of one additional cycle (e.g. if you get accepted in Cycle 2 and your map is either qualified, or rejected at any stage, you can reapply with the same or different map in Cycle 4)
Working inside of the group, and its benefits:
  1. Modders should fulfill a set quota of maps from an application pool each cycle. The maps chosen are entirely optional for each individual mapper as long as the quota is fulfilled. Maps which receive fewer mods can be used as teaching material for newer modders in the Modding School.
  2. Each month, a modder will be declared “Modder of the Month” based on their performance. The reward for this is a guaranteed mod (not necessarily a check / icon) from a nominator.
  3. Modders joining from the Modding School will start at Tier 1 on the modding ladder to gain experience of modding on their own and as part of a team. When a map is rejected by the level above, they will provide feedback to the members of the level below.
  4. If a group member disagrees with a map’s Qualified status and are unsure/unconfident of requesting a DQ themselves, the mapset can be made the subject of group discussion to reach a conclusion as to whether the mapset is ready for ranking or not.
  5. Group members are allowed to submit a mapset during EVERY cycle, rather than following the same submission rules as non-members, though, they will still have to submit the two mods.
  6. For members violating Code of Conduct, warnings will be given before suspension or removal of the member from the group. This will be handled on a case-by-case basis by Nominators / QAT's.

Conclusion



In short, this queue is to help further the mapping community through a collective group in which modding is encouraged. In the beginning, the queue may be rough as we will be learning to accustom ourselves to this new scenario, but we aim for the queue to help mappers and modders alike reach their fullest potential. We ask that you please not join this group for the benefits or for speedranking your map, but instead to help assist others, as well as yourself, in improvement across all aspects of modding and mapping.
