Problem Details

This issue may or may not have relevance to the following thread: https://osu.ppy.sh/forum/t/215544
I inadvertently came across this in the current build. If the "not submitted" map in question was one that once was submitted to the website, it's possible to return the thumbnail image(s) to their correct positions next to the difficulties, and the process is both odd and simple:

1. In song select, select the difficulty in question that is missing its thumbnail.
  • (If you deselect the song, and return to that difficulty, there may or may not be an indentation next to that difficulty's star rating, as if the game is making space for the thumbnail image)
2. Launch any song difficulty. This can be the difficulty in question, or a difficulty of a separate mapset.
  • On returning to the song difficulty that you selected before, you should see that the thumbnail image has returned. What's more, the thumbnail image remains, even if the game is closed.
Relevant common test results:
  1. Hitting f5 to refresh the maps changes nothing. All missing thumbnails remain missing, and all restored thumbnails remain restored.
  2. Running the osu!updater manually had no effect. (I was on the latest version of the game upon discovering this)
  3. Deleting osu.db and then having osu! rebuild it often ends up with some songs (of the type described before) with their thumbnails missing again, even if they were previously restored using this methodology. (They can be brought back again with the same technique, however)
I am still unsure what causes this self-repair to occur; it was suggested that the game is trying to call in the thumbnail of the selected difficulty, trying to load it into memory.

I wish to know if there is a way to permanently restore these types of thumbnails, besides the methodology I have given, that is also not affected by osu.db being deleted and reconstructed.

Video or screenshot showing the problem

This song was once submitted to the website ("Latest pending version" displays in osu!), but has since had metadata changes in form of changes to the song name and song author. All difficulties in this mapset are labeled as "Not submitted".

Other tests have shown that changes in the metadata toward the name of the mapper for the mapset have seemingly identical effects.

That's very weird. At the moment thumbnails are only loaded for submitted maps, to the best of my knowledge.

FWIW, the map is still submitted, but the song name has changed. Perhaps the matching Beatmap ID is causing this to happen?

Upon exploration, it seems that this restoration occurs in two situations (to my knowledge; there may be more):

1. A map where the song title or author name has been changed
2. A map where the username for the map creator is not linked to any account (that is, the username can't be found on the website, often due to the user changing his or her name)
Screenshots (and corresponding map links) for situation 1 follow.

Screenshots and corresponding links for situation 2 follow.

(This mapset does seem to be gone from the website; not even following the in-game link to the beatmap set online works, stating there is no beatmap set with that ID. I assume that it has been moved to https://osu.ppy.sh/s/87062 and is being redone, given the similarities between the usernames of authors in the screenshot and the linked mapset.)

Update with a couple more looks into this:

-I feel silly for not noticing before, but the chat icon bubble on the song select for each of these mapsets (the ones that let you see the beatmap page, beatmap forum thread, etc.) still exists on all of these maps. What's more, they correctly navigate to the proper beatmap page. Any attempts to navigate to the forum thread of the mapset in question, however, leads to http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/t/0, which doesn't exist. Attempting to use the "Quick Reply" option also yields a page stating that the topic in question does not exist.

-A comparison of my folder for M.A.M.A. (https://osu.ppy.sh/s/176446, the same mapset as shown in the previous post) notes the following:

BeatmapSetID (folder): 176446. This matches the ID given in the URL for this mapset.
NM Difficulty BeatmapID (in my folder): 429551. This matches the URL of the NM difficulty (https://osu.ppy.sh/b/429551&m=3).
HD Difficulty BeatmapID (in my folder): 429549, matching the URL of the HD difficulty(https://osu.ppy.sh/b/429549&m=3).
MX for both gives 429550, SHD for both gives 429552, ExTra for both gives 429548.

-In other words, both the BeatmapSetID and BeatmapIDs for individual difficulties in my folder are exactly the same as the mapset's information on the website.

Does something go awry with beatmap updates to cause this? I note that all three possible sources of this issue (song title, author, and username of map author) are part of the metadata in the "General" tab of Song Setup...

Additionally, my previous posts will be updated with up-to-date information.
Without doubt, this is still happening. One more new example to prove the point, of the mapset at http://osu.ppy.sh/b/536476. The problem: the author name was changed from "USAO" to "USAO ft. Callum".

On an aside, should the title be changed for this thread, something more accompanying the fact that changes to the song's song name, song author, or mapper name create this false "Not submitted" status, and prevents further updates of the map?

Brought this to the main Help forum as requested in PM (as it still occurs).

To my knowledge what peppy said below is correct. I'm not sure what exactly is going on with this. I'll see if I can replicate this later.

Edit: confirming this for now.

I did a bit of research into this. Apparently these unsubmitted maps have a proper setid saved, but at the time the beatmap tree item is initialized this setid is -1. The thumbnail will load when an action that registers the setid is triggered. Doing a full process doesn't seem to help in this regard, so i'm not sure why exactly they are shown as -1.

t/320138 ??
Isn't this practically the same?
The ID sets the thumbnail of the map
This thread's a little long so I skimmed it a little, but still.
After a metadat change (makes it unsubmitted) the beatmapID etc. Still stay the same, thus the Thumbnail uses that BG as thumbnail

No. This is about issues/weird behaviour with thumbnails loading. Read the posts carefully.

Oops
Misunderstood a little >_<
This is for them getting back after being 'removed' due to metadata change after a play, right?
Ah well, 00:45 here, getting tired; understanding thing bad now

The problem is more than just thumbnails being arbitrarily taken from the setid. You can have maps that for whatever reason have a setid in the config but the db value still detects the map as not having a setid.

Moving to low priority for now...
