Problem Details:
I noticed that the playcounts on maps aren't shown correctly. On the screenshots below it says that Mara's Hard map Deagle God got 609 sent scores from different players. The second screenshot shows that there are only 459 sent scores. I myself needed more than 100 tries to got the ss. So, this playcounter seems wrong to me.

Video or screenshot showing the problem:

Also this: http://puu.sh/aMgKN/e222eb218e.jpg
http://puu.sh/aMgKa/680733cc58.jpg

It's one of the most played maps and hasn't even reached 20k plays according to that counter.

Seeing the same problem with my ranked map. ;_;

You're not even linking the maps you are referring to.

That's just an example... It's on every Mapset.

Another example for Guy's Mapset Aoi Eir - IGNITE (TV size ver.). It has been on qualified status since July 11 and officially on ranked status since 18 July. Today is the second of Septembre. So, it has been ranked since 53 days if I'm not wrong and has been on the peak of the most played maps with let's say at least 35.000 plays on the average every day. 53 x 35.000 = 1.855.000. Let's see how many plays it actually has:

Wait what, only 1.135.000 plays? Let's take a look at this. 1.135.000 : 53 = 21.415
I think we all know that it has never been that low playcountwise. It was always first with 30k+ plays and even today on a Monday where we're all busy it has at least 27.000 plays according to the page.

my guess is the play count showing on the front page is wrong, but it needs further investigation.

Do you mean everything shown on this site https://osu.ppy.sh/p/beatmaplist? If so, that's exactly what I mean then. Every shown playcount there is too little by almost a half (just guessing)?
peppy
The other way around. The front page stats are most likely wrong.

I still don't really get what you mean with front page... That page where the most played beatmaps are listed? I don't think that these counter are broken.

Let me show you another example to make it more clear.
Let's look at this mapset here: Hanazawa Kana - Meiwaku Spectacle (TV Size)
So, if we're looking at the scoreboards on Railgun's Normal, it says that there are 934 different people who actually sent a score, right?

So, this difficulty MUST HAVE at least 934 plays on it. But who plays a map just one time? I personally play a map 10 or 20 times in a row. But let's just say that the average is 5. This being said it should've around 5.000 plays just on that one difficulty. But if we're taking a look at it, it shows only 600 plays? :O

According to the page it only has 9.000 plays in total which doesn't make any sense to me to be honest.
Bara-
The frontpage shows all diffs ya know?
drum drum
How does the play count value increment exactly? Is it on-refresh or does it cache for a while? How is "over the last 24 hours determined"? Are the counters out of sync?

These are just my thoughts and questions
peppy
It is likely a mixture of cache and statistics being pulled from different places.

Anything new here?

Btw, the headline should be called "Playcounter for all Mapsets seem wrong."

As you created this, you can change that yourself right?

I had this, thanks for the confirmation!

I'm surprised that peppy didn't put an end to this 'problem', but here is what I think:

1: Success rate shows the most simplified form of all plays (ex: 513/677 could mean 1026/1354 plays or 5130/6770 plays and so forth)

2: 9486 shows the play count for all difficulties, but not everyone plays the difficulty 5 times. Even I have some maps that I never touched again after playing it on multi.

yea.

This can be the case, looks rather solid, as it only gives a percentage (but then he could also say xxx out of 1000)

That's wrong. One of the earlier screenshots showed 6 out of 8 plays passed, which could easily be simplified to 3 out of 4.

The problem may be a bit deeper than it looks, including inaccurate data ingame as well.

According to #X of X, there are only 12 players that scored worse than my 8 million point score:

But looking at mod scoreboards, that's pretty obviously not true:

Something doesn't add up, either in the way the client caches that number or with the play data in general.

Where it says "#X out of #Y", the Y is incorrect. At some point long ago I had a friend told me he was ranked #3900 or something on a Taiko map, while for me said map showed I was #2500 out of 3700 or something. I'm not sure about all the numbers, but his rank was lower than the total amount of players it told me the map had. Might also be related to how sometimes, it won't even show X out of Y, it just shows your rank without the total.

It would be cool if this would get more attention since it's a bigger problem than expected. :C

I'm quite concerned about this issue too. According to Cloudsplash, older maps ranked before the playcounter broke don't seem to be affected since they all retain their massive playcounts, but for sure playcount is wrong everything ranked after some time in the summer of 2014.

Also confusing me is the discrepancy with nold's map. Over the last few days (since it hit ranked), its playcount in the beatmap listing been slowly gaining on 7 seven (increasing faster than 7 seven), however it isn't and never was in the front page's most played maps at all.

Here is a screenshot I took just now, April 2, 2015 2:30 AM PST of the two playcounts. As you can see, T-T-Techno is behind 7 seven by 1000.

I'll take another screenshot (or you can see for yourself) later that shows nold's map's playcount getting closer, which means it must have had more plays despite not appearing in the most played list.

edit: 24 days later
peppy
I finally found the reason for this. It also means the total number of ranked plays we were seeing is far below what it should have been.
Bara-
What do you mean by that?
Did the game fail to upload retries or something?
xxdeathx
I'm curious—what was the reason? (forgive me if it's too technical)

In addition, did you find out the cause of what I described in my previous post? It led me to suspect that playcounters were only broken for maps submitted after some point around the middle of 2014.
