When they're used in the middle of complicated patterns and they're clearly forced, they're annoying. They're nice, but I get the impression that they're used because the mapper can't think of anything more imaginative. It's even worse when a star blatantly doesn't fit the theme of the track and/or the map. For example, if the map's more based around smooth shapes and curves (i.e. few polygons), it feels silly to see a star out of nowhere.
'Poinsettia' is obviously an acceptable use of star formations, because Sanae is a star-spamming bitch (especially in Soku). It's a shame that the map's pretty obnoxious in parts.
D33d's #1 personal mapping rule: Use common sense. If something can not be justified with this, with the only reason being, "I'm being creative," then you are fabricating a bullshit-shaped house of cards on the San Andreas Fault.
I've been incredibly busy over the past couple of weeks and I'll still be busy this week. PM me for anything that's really important.
